Mica

Mica

Mica is an extremely versatile flake mineral used in ceramics to produce shiny, textured and visually rich effects in glazes. Its characteristic lamellar structure, consisting of thin, flexible layers, is the key to its ability to create a subtle sheen and an almost translucent appearance. When added to glazes, mica allows ceramic pieces to develop a surface that reflects light in a special way, giving a finish that can appear almost iridescent or metallic, depending on how it is applied and the firing. Mica is also used to create finishes in high-relief glazes, as its lamellar structure allows for the addition of a physical texture, enhancing the tactile sensation of the piece.

Interesting Fact

Mica is widely used outside of ceramics, in cosmetics and electronics, due to its ability to withstand high temperatures and its brilliant structure.

Helpful Tip

If you're looking to add a touch of sparkle to your glazes, incorporate mica into your mix. However, use it sparingly to prevent the surface of the glaze from becoming too rough or the glitter from becoming too much.
