Engobe
Engobe is a liquid clay slip, with or without colorants, applied to ceramic pieces to add color, texture or decorative effects prior to firing. It can be used on both raw and fired pieces and, because it contains fluxes, it fuses with the clay body during firing, creating a durable and stable layer.
It is very versatile and allows a variety of applications, such as covering pieces completely to achieve color contrasts, decorating with brushwork, sgraffito or stenciling, and producing vibrant tones by incorporating oxides and pigments. It can also be combined with glazes to obtain complex finishes, such as colored engobes covered with transparent glazes to give shine.
In addition to its decorative use, engobe offers practical solutions, such as improving surface uniformity, hiding imperfections and creating customized textures, from matte to rough finishes. This technique is essential in both handmade and industrial ceramics because of its ability to transform simple pieces into unique and functional creations.Interesting Fact
Engobes have been used for centuries to create color contrasts in ceramic pieces, from ancient Mesopotamian cultures to modern decorative techniques.Helpful Tip
Experiment with engobes by applying them in different thicknesses and using tools such as brushes or sponges to create unique textures and patterns.
