Lump of clay

Lump of clay

A lump of clay is a portion of hand-molded clay that serves as an initial base to work on the creation of ceramic pieces. It is a basic preparation in modeling and wheel work, as it allows the consistency, plasticity and moisture of the clay to be checked before shaping begins. Lump of clays are usually formed by kneading to ensure that they are free of air bubbles, which reduces the risk of defects during modeling and firing. In hand modeling techniques, lumps of clay are used to build shapes from small volumes that are then combined into larger or more complex pieces, such as handles, reliefs and other decorative elements. On the pottery wheel, the lump of clay is the starting point, as it is centered and shaped to create the base of the final piece.

Interesting Fact

In traditional potteries, lumps of clay were molded and prepared beforehand by the apprentices, who acquired through this exercise the necessary skills to work the clay correctly and guarantee its quality in more advanced projects.

Helpful Tip

Before you start modeling, make sure the clay has a uniform consistency. If you notice harder or dry areas, knead the clay again or add a slight amount of water to improve workability and avoid problems during modeling.
