Greda
Greda is a type of natural clay composed mainly of kaolin, silica and metallic oxides, which give it a fine texture and a tonality that can vary from white to warmer colors such as beige, yellow or brown. It is especially known for its high plasticity, which makes it ideal for hand modeling and pottery wheel. In addition, its firing at low temperatures produces porous pieces, characteristic of earthenware, while at higher firings it can be partially vitrified.
In decorative and functional ceramics, greda is used to produce kitchen utensils, pots and decorative pieces, especially in traditional potteries. In some cultures, it is also used as a base for engobes and decorations in rustic ceramics.Interesting Fact
Greda has been used since ancient times to make cooking utensils because of its ability to retain heat and keep food warm longer. Even today, clay pots and pans are prized for their ability to enhance flavors in traditional cooking.Helpful Tip
Dry slowly the pieces made with greda to avoid cracks, since its high plasticity can increase shrinkage during drying. To improve its resistance, apply a transparent glaze that waterproofs it and enhances its natural color after firing.
