Decal or transfer

Decal or transfer

Decals are images, patterns or designs printed on special paper that are transferred to the surface of the pieces for decoration. This process is generally carried out after the initial glazing and bisque firing, fixing the image by means of a second firing at low temperature (generally between 700 and 850 °C). During this stage, the decal is integrated into the glazeed surface, making it permanent and resistant to wear. However, there is also the possibility of applying them under cover, i.e. placing them before glazing the piece, which allows the design to be encapsulated under a layer of transparent glaze. Their advantages include precision, speed and ease of producing detailed designs, especially in large volumes. However, they also have limitations, such as the possible distortion of the design during glazing or firing, and the need for compatible materials to avoid defects.

Interesting Fact

Ceramic decals were invented in the 18th century and allowed for more efficient mass production of decorated ceramics, particularly in English factories such as Wedgwood.

Helpful Tip

Be sure to apply the decals on a clean, dust-free surface and fire at the recommended temperature so that the image fuses properly with the glaze.
