Vermiculite

Vermiculite

Vermiculite is a natural mineral used in ceramics mainly as a thermal insulator and support material during firing. Its laminated structure and its ability to expand when heated make it an excellent insulator, ideal for lining kilns or protecting delicate parts during firing. In addition, due to its lightness and heat resistance, vermiculite is also used as a filler material in ceramic supports and molds. In artistic ceramics, vermiculite is used to create temporary molds or support structures that can be removed after firing. It is also useful for stabilizing complex pieces that need additional support to prevent deformation during the firing process. Another notable application of vermiculite is in kiln construction, where it is used as part of the insulation to improve energy efficiency and reduce heat losses. Its ability to withstand extreme temperatures without decomposing makes it especially valuable in technical and industrial ceramics.

Interesting Fact

Vermiculite occurs naturally in geological deposits throughout the world and, due to its ability to expand with heat, is also used in horticulture as a soil conditioner.

Helpful Tip

When handling vermiculite, wear gloves and a mask, as the dust generated can be irritating to the respiratory tract. If you use it as a support material in firings, make sure it is dry before placing it in the kiln to avoid the generation of steam that could affect the pieces. Store it in a dry place protected from humidity to guarantee its effectiveness.
