Vanadium oxide (V₂O5)

Vanadium oxide (V₂O5)

Vanadium oxide is a less common ceramic colorant but highly valued for its ability to produce a wide range of colors, including yellow, green and, in some cases, subtle blue tones in glazes. This oxide is noted for its versatility and is especially valued in artistic and decorative ceramics for the special effects it provides. Depending on the firing temperature, glaze composition and kiln atmosphere (oxidizing or reducing), vanadium oxide can generate rich, vibrant tones that vary in intensity and saturation. In addition to its ability to produce intense colors, vanadium oxide is compatible with other oxides, such as chromium or copper, with which it can be mixed to create visual effects.

Interesting Fact

Vanadium is a chemical element that has applications not only in ceramics, but also in the manufacture of high-strength steel.

Helpful Tip

Use vanadium oxide in small quantities and with caution, as it is a toxic compound in powder form. Conduct test firings to see how the color behaves in different temperatures and atmospheric conditions.
