Sieve

Sieve

The sieve is a fundamental tool in ceramics used to filter and refine materials such as liquid clays, engobes and glazes. It is composed of a frame that holds a mesh of different sizes, designed to remove large particles, impurities or lumps, ensuring homogeneous and well-refined mixtures. The use of the sieve is crucial to obtain smooth and uniform finishes, as even small impurities can cause defects on the surface of the pieces. In the glazing process, the sieve helps prevent problems such as bubbling or cracking, ensuring that the glaze application is uniform and professional. It is also indispensable in the preparation of slip, where it ensures that clay particles are kept in suspension.

Interesting Fact

In industrial ceramics, the sieve is used not only to prepare materials, but also to recycle leftover glazes. Glazes collected after application are passed through fine sieves to remove impurities and hardened particles, allowing them to be reused in new batches.

Helpful Tip

Select the appropriate mesh size according to the material to be filtered. For example, for glazes, use a fine mesh (around 120-200 microns) to ensure a flawless finish. Clean the sieve immediately after use to prevent the material from hardening on the mesh and making it difficult to clean.
