Ribs or kidneys

Ribs and kidneys are hand tools widely used in pottery and in various techniques. Made of various materials - wood, metal, rubber or plastic - their main function is to help shape the walls of the pieces while refining and smoothing the surface to obtain a uniform finish. In addition to shaping, the ribs have the function of smoothing the surface, removing small irregularities and compacting the clay, improving the final strength of the piece. Over time, specialized ribs have been developed: some more rigid and angular for initial shaping, others more flexible and soft (such as rubber) for the final finish. In this way, a set of kidneys with different curvatures, lengths and flexibility is available, and the most suitable one can be chosen for each stage of the work.

Interesting Fact

Although simple in appearance, these tools have been employed for centuries by potters and potteries around the world. Over time, their shape and materials have evolved, but their basic principle remains the same: an essential tool for manipulating clay with efficiency, precision and control.

Helpful Tip

Use kidneys of different materials depending on the hardness of the clay and the type of finish you are looking for. For example, a thin metal rib may be ideal for outlining sharp contours, while a rubber ones will be useful for achieving a velvety smooth surface in the final stages.
