Deburring

Deburring

Deburring is the process of cleaning and smoothing the ceramic pieces after molding, focused on eliminating burrs, joint marks or any excess material left during the molding process. It is a fundamental stage in the preparation of the pieces before firing, since it guarantees both the aesthetic quality and the functionality of the pieces. This process is carried out using specific tools such as ceramic knives, wet sponges, scoopers or even rotary tools in more complex cases. Deburring not only removes visible imperfections, but also smoothes surfaces and edges, ensuring that the pieces are comfortable to the touch and ready for glazing or subsequent decorations. Deburring is especially critical on utilitarian pieces, such as dinnerware or vessels, where smoothness and precision are essential for both everyday use and durability. It is also important on decorative pieces, where even the smallest imperfections can affect the final result after glazing or vitrification.

Interesting Fact

Some advanced deburring techniques use motorized tools, such as small electric sanders or milling machines, for larger or more complex parts, which speeds up the process and allows for an even more precise finish.

Helpful Tip

When deburring your parts, be sure to do so while they are still leather-hard, as it is easier to remove burrs and mold marks without damaging the part.
